How would you implement an "expert" mode that unhides expert parameters?

I've tried a couple of approaches, even to override the Option class (as ExpertOption) but so far, I've not found a good solution. I'd like the expert mode to be triggered by a global --expert flag (which also reads from an env variable). Any ideas?
