Ethan:

• My understanding is that we should not need rosbags library (from HKUST?), just rosbag would suffice, and do not decode the rest of the messages
• So in the future if we have other messages not supported in rosbags, it still works

FYI, Jiahao,

In this ROS2 tool I try to decode a message. If I cannot decode it, I write it to the output file without modifying it:

If I can decode it I do work with it.

You could take this approach your tool. That way you could skip all messages you dont have message types for.

refactor code

• I've refactor the code to isolate the part regarding processing of rosbags
• hence the only thing left is to decide which module to use in that single py file

modules available:

bagpy	ROS1	ROS1 bags	can try read image and write everything else to bag
rosbag2_py	ROS2	ROS2 bags	can try read image and write everything else to bag
rosbags	ROS1 or ROS2	ROS1 or ROS2 bags	requires message definitions to write everything else to bag

routes:

• bagpy operate on ros1 system and open ros1 bags using bagpy
• rosbag2_py operate on ros2 system and convert ros1 bags to ros2 bags and uses rosbag2_py
• rosbags: operate on ros2 system and open ros1 bags, but requires message definition and is not future proof
