Inline math in unordered list for Mermaid diagram

I am trying to render inline math in an unordered list for a simple mermaid diagram:

I am using the mermaid CLI to compile, but unfortunately the rendered image shows only block math.

I have tried other syntax (single dollar signs for instance) but it didn't help.

How can I render inline math in mermaid in this context?
