Describe the integration you'd like

Hi, are there any plans to integrate the Broadlink RM5 Plus infrared remote control? Home Assistant tells me that the device is not supported.
If this is not possible or support is not planned, I would return the remote control.

What are your use cases for this integration?

I just want to finally make my old ceiling fan smart so I don't have to sweat in this summer.

Is there a public API or documentation?

I also have the Broadlink RM5 Plus and can confirm it is not recognised by the Broadlink integration (“Device not supported”).

Desperately trying to remote control my mother-in-laws Hisense TV from several hundred miles away. Mainly for my sanity. This may or may not involve discrete IR codes (my next hurdle) but getting this to work would seem to be the first problem.

As far as I know the RM5 is not supported. Or am I wrong?

You can add the device yourself.
You need to go to the HA docker container, find the broadlink library, and add the device to the list of supported devices.
In Home Assistant OS, you can do this via the SSH & Web Terminal add-on.
Find the folder with the broadlink library
docker exec -it homeassistant /bin/bash -c “python3 -m pip show broadlink | grep Location”
The result will be something like this:
Location: /usr/local/lib/python3.13/site-packages - this is the path to the library
Next, connect to the container:
docker exec -it homeassistant /bin/bash
Go to the folder: (Location: /usr/local/lib/python3.13/site-packages/broadlink)
cd /usr/local/lib/python3.13/site-packages/broadlink
Open the file with the vi editor:
vi __init__.py
Find the rm4pro block and add the following line:
0x5224: (“RM5 plus”, “Broadlink”),
Save and close

Now you can add the device to HA, but this method will only work until HA is updated. After the update, you will need to repeat the operation until support is added on a permanent basis.
