gps().isFixed() is always false even when lat/lon are valid values

I'm using the gps().isFixed() method in my code to implement an LED strategy.  I notice that the method always returns false, even if the lat/lon values are accurate.  

Also, I never see the Fix (led1) on the GPS board light up.  I'm guessing they are related?
