Serverless, Docker, AWS CDK the future of managing bref projects

Bref is designed out of the box to deploy using the Serverless Framework.

Bref can also work with any other deployment tool: Terraform, CloudFormation, SAM, AWS CDK, > Pulumi… However, the documentation and user experience is optimized for Serverless Framework.

I would be interested to hear about the long-term plans for the deployment tools.

For Serverless v3, you offer a fork, which the bref community will not (and cannot) support forever?

With Docker or AWS CDK, you also offer alternatives in the documentation.

I would be interested to hear how the long-term solution for bref should look like? I guess recommending serverless is not the way you want to support forever.

Why not?

All current deployment options for Bref works well and has no reason it wouldn’t continue to work long-term. Is there a specific concern you have in mind?

Do you guys really want to maintain a fork of serverless for a longer period of time?

I've been using bref for years and know why serverless is the official recommendation (also thanks to the lift plugin). It can do a lot, has a large community, and the licence was no problem for companies of any size.

The reason for my question is that I am starting a new project and am wondering whether using your forked serverless CLI is really the best way to go.

I'd 100% recommend the serverless framework fork right now. I am considering maintaining it for the very long term. At the moment the horizon in my mind is at least 5 years (I have 5 years old Bref apps that work fine, maintaining osls for the next 5 years doesn't sound like a huge lift). We've also done the biggest work needed I think, which is migrating to AWS SDK v3 internally. It's currently behind a feature flag, but I feel more confident now that we'll switch to it soon.

I've used CDK a lot and honestly it is much worse at the overall dev experience.
